Japanese Lacquer of the Meiji and Taishô Periods from the Baur Collection
12 October 2001 - 13 January 2002
-
In the present exhibition, more than 180 Japanese lacquers highlight the years between 1890 and 1940. These pieces are the witnesses of the revival of the Japanese lacquer art at the beginning of the 20th century. Alfred Baur collected them between 1925 and 1951. Large documents and writing boxes, delicate incense boxes and elegant pipe cases as well as tea containers are displayed in the new gallery. A coloured illustrated catalogue in English and German has been published for this exhibition which was shown at the Museum für Lackkunst Münster in Germany last year.
